Description :
The hawksbill turtle is a marine animal belonging to the Cheloniidae family. It is found around tropical seas including the Caribbean coast, Mayotte and Reunion.
This type of turtle has very particular anatomical characteristics. The hawksbill turtle is the only known primarily spongivorous reptile (which feeds on sponges) that is known today. Thanks to this diet based on sponges, the animal releases clumps of coral allowing certain types of fish to feed on the reefs. Which makes it a great protector of the environment. It is able to sleep underwater for quite a long time thanks to its lungs which let oxygen pass easily to ventilate the tissues of its body.
Today, hawksbill turtles are classified as endangered species because they are extremely hunted by humans. This because of the superior nature of their beautiful shell which is the object of a large trade in certain parts of the world. This relentless pursuit has caused its near total disappearance in East Africa.
Fortunately, there are still people who are aware of the challenge of protecting animals in particular and the environment in general. This is the case of the eco-artist MaxiDiouf whose work is mainly focused on the preservation of endangered animals such as the hawksbill turtle.
In his futuristic and ecological vision, Maxidiouf uses the beauty of art to contribute to the preservation of our planet. His painting of an hawksbill turtle is done in the greatest respect for nature with the use of recycled materials, namely recycled plastic and recycled fishing nets.
